The Chakana, a 12-stepped cross, is a millenary symbol from pre-colonial Andean period, it now celebrates general Andean heritage in Peru. A heritage thought now, to go hand in hand with Peruanidad (Peruvian-ness).

Chicha is a populist aesthetic and music genre from the 1980s, relying on Andean lament, amateur design, tackyness and neon.

Its surviving name comes from the Quechua word root, [(Chakay):to bridge], it unites all realms between the heavens and the underworld, love, virtues, work. Peruvian-ness, or for that matter, South American-ness is a state of constant emotional split. Internal colonialism long noted those with closer ties or physical features to the indigenous, as a sub-class. The term of “Cholo” literally means half-breed. The propagation of Chicha slowly turned public acceptance around, and its aesthetic has become synonymous with Peru as a whole. But how to advance the conversation of a decolonized national aesthetic past its initial limitations and with its metaphysical nature in mind.
